Designing A Motivational Syllabus
A thoughtfully constructed syllabus can be transformative for your students' learning, communicating the path they can take to succeed. This book demonstrates how, rather than being a mundane document to convey policies, you can construct your syllabus to be a motivating resource that conveys a clear sense of your course's learning goals, how students can achieve those goals, and makes evident your teaching philosophy and why you have adopted the teaching strategies you will use, such as discussion or group activities. Developing or revising a syllabus also presents you with a perfect opportunity to review the learning possibilities for the semester. Well-designed, it can help you stay focused on achieving the learning outcomes, as well as determine if the class is on track and whether adjustments to the schedule are needed. The authors show how, by adopting a welcoming tone and clearly stating learning outcomes, your syllabus can engage students by explaining the relevance of your course to their studies, create an all-important positive first impression of you as an instructor, and guide students through the resources you will be using, the assignments ahead, as well as clear guidance on how they will be assessed. Referred to frequently as the course progresses, an effective syllabus will keep students engaged and on task.Christine Harrington and Melissa Thomas lead you through all the elements of a syllabus to help you identify how to present key messages and information about your course, think through the impressions you want to create, and, equally importantly, suggest how you can use layout and elements such as images and charts to make your syllabus visually appealing and easy to navigate.
Regulation of the tumor suppressor PTEN through exosomes: a diagnostic potential for prostate cancer
PTEN is a potent tumor-suppressor protein. Aggressive and metastatic prostate cancer (PC) is associated with a reduction or loss of PTEN expression. PTEN reduction often occurs without gene mutations, and its downregulation is not fully understood. Herein, we show that PTEN is incorporated in the cargo of exosomes derived from cancer cells. PTEN is not detected in exosomes derived from normal, noncancerous cells. We found that PTEN can be transferred to other cells through exosomes. In cells that have a reduction or complete loss of PTEN expression, the transferred PTEN is competent to confer tumor-suppression activity to acceptor cells. In PC patients, we show that PTEN is incorporated in the cargo of exosomes that circulate in their blood. Interestingly, normal subjects have no PTEN expression in their blood exosomes. Further, we found that the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is incorporated in PC patients' and normal subjects' blood exosomes. These data suggest that exosomal PTEN can compensate for PTEN loss in PTEN deficient cells, and may have diagnostic value for prostate cancer.
Implementation of a Writing Strategy for Students with Learning Disabilities in a Rural Setting
This study reports findings on the fidelity of implementation of the Strategic Instructional Model (SIM), Proficiency in the Sentence Writing Strategy (Schumaker & Sheldon, 1999) in five rural secondary special education classrooms. Participants were 5 special education teachers and 38 secondary students identified with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Major findings indicated a significant difference between the level of fidelity of implementation and student gains in writing complete sentences and identified specific factors that influenced the treatment delivery. Results from student attitude surveys suggested little difference in their perception of the value of writing as a result of the intervention.
Teprotumumab for Thyroid-Associated Ophthalmopathy
In patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy, responses to treatment are rare and usually minor. Teprotumumab, an antibody to the insulin-like growth factor I receptor, led to significant responses in 69% of patients and to decreased proptosis. Medical therapies for moderate-to-severe thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (Graves’ orbitopathy) that have proved to be effective and safe in adequately powered, prospective, placebo-controlled trials are lacking. This unmet need is due to the incompletely understood pathogenesis of the disease. 1 Current treatments are inconsistently beneficial and often associated with side effects, and their modification of the ultimate disease outcome is uncertain. 1 – 3 Previous clinical trials, which were rarely placebo-controlled, suggest that high-dose glucocorticoids, alone 3 – 5 or with radiotherapy, 6 , 7 can reduce inflammation-related signs and symptoms in patients with active ophthalmopathy. However, glucocorticoids and orbital radiotherapy minimally affect proptosis and can cause dose-limiting adverse . . .
Teprotunumab for thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy
The article reports on a study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of teprotunumab as a form of treatment for patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy. The results indicate that among these patients teprotunumab was found to be quite effective.

Fraud and Abuse: OIG Advisory Opinion No. 00-3
The Office of the Inspector General issued an advisory opinion in April announcing that an arrangement to provide various services free of charge to patients with terminal illnesses who have a prognosis of one year or less to live (the “Program”) does not constitute grounds for sanctions under either the anti-kickback statute, section 1128(b) of the Social Security Act, or under section 1128A(a)(5) of the Act, which prohibits offering of inducements to beneficiaries to influence their selection of a provider for Medicare or Medicaid covered services. Using The Syllabus
The syllabus is an incredibly important document. Research has consistently shown that students report regularly reviewing this course document. In a study conducted by Smith and Razzouk (1993), 20% of the participants reported using the syllabus every day, and 57% of the participants reported using the syllabus at least once per week. Thus, most students are referring to this important resource at least once per week. That makes the syllabus one of the most important documents in the course and one that should be designed with careful attention to detail. Unfortunately, not all students take full advantage of this important document. One way to increase students' use of the syllabus is to include information that students value and need. When students view the content in the syllabus as meaningful and as an important resource, they will be more likely to use it throughout the semester. For example, students with a syllabus that contains detailed information and guidance about assignments would be more likely to regularly refer to the syllabus as compared to students who have a syllabus that contains only general information about the course. Thus, the nature of the syllabus will affect the frequency in which students use it throughout the semester.
Core Components
Students attend colleges and universities with the goal of being successful learners and often rely on the syllabus to serve as a guide to facilitate that success. An effective syllabus provides students with all of the essential information necessary for them to successfully achieve the course goals. In essence, the syllabus maps out the learning path, identifying the tasks that need to be completed, the sequence and timing of course information, the scope and criteria for success, and the expected behaviors of members of the class. This chapter will focus on the course information and assignments aspect of the syllabus; chapter 4 is devoted to course policies and methods for including those policies in the syllabus.
